PSLE 2023 Math Question – Fraction/Ratio
Given AB = BC = CD. The ratio of the area of ΔAEC to ΔFBC = 8 : 1.
What fraction of the figure is shaded?
Solutions
ΔAEC / ΔDGB is 1⁄2 of 2⁄3 of the rectangle.
1⁄2 × 2⁄3 = 1⁄3
ΔAEC / ΔDGB is 1⁄3 of the rectangle.
1⁄3 of the rectangle = 8u
3⁄3 of the rectangle = 8u x 3 = 24u
BAEF = CDGF = 8u – 1u = 7u
Shaded figure = 7u + 1u + 7u = 15u
Fraction of figure that is shaded = 15⁄24 = 5⁄8
PSLE 2023 Math Question – Ratio/Percentage
Colin had some badges, postcards and magnets. He had 85 badges. 30% of his items were postcards. He had 51 less postcards than magnets.
- How many postcards did he have?
- He gave some postcards away. The total collection decreased by 20%. What was the new percentage of postcards he had in the end?
Solutions
a)
P : B + M
30 : 70
3 : 7
Since there are 51 fewer postcards than magnets and there are 85 badges, we can draw a simple model below to visualise the relationship between the 3 items.
4 units = 51 + 85 = 136
1 unit = 136 4 = 34
3 units = 34 x 3 = 102 (Ans)
b)
10 units = 34 x 10 = 340
Decrease = 20⁄100 x 340 = 68
Since only the postcards decreased, the decrease in the total collection is the same as the number of postcards given away.
102 – 68 = 34 (Postcards in the end)
340 – 68 = 272 (Total in the end)
34⁄272 x 100% = 12.5% (Ans)
