Gap and Difference Question 1

Jovan bought 16 pencil cases. If the price of each pencil case was reduced by $3, he would be able to buy 2 more pencil cases. Find the cost of 1 pencil case.

Solutions

Gap and Difference Questions

Total amount saved = $3 × 16

                                = $48

When the price of each pencil case is reduced by $3, he would be able to save $48 in total.

Jovan can use this $48 extra cash to buy the 2 more pencil cases which are sold at the reduced price.

Gap and Difference Questions

2 u = $48

1 u = $48  2 = $24

The cost of 1 pencil case if the price is reduced is $24.

Actual cost of 1 pencil case = $24 + $3 = $27 (Ans)

Gap and Difference Question 2

Blaine wanted to make some toys and he decided to use 22 ice-cream sticks for each toy.
His brother gave him another 10 ice-cream sticks.
Then, he decided to use 20 ice-cream sticks for each toy instead of 22.
As a result, he was able to make 2 more toys.
How many toys did he make in the end?

Solutions

Gap and Difference Questions

Number of sticks used for the 2 more 20-sticks toys = 20 × 2 = 40

These 40 sticks came from the sticks given by Blaine’s brother and the additional 2 more sticks in each toy previously.

40 – 10 = 30

These 30 sticks make up the total of all the additional 2 more sticks in each toy previously.

By dividing this total extra amount by the extra amount in each toy, we find the number of toys previously.

Previous number of toys = 30 ÷ 2 = 15

Number of toys in the end = 15 + 2 = 17 (Ans)
